Barclaycard Expanding UK Contactless Rollout
Barclaycard plans to issue 1 million contactless credit cards in the UK by the end of 2008. The issuer also aims to increase the number of retailers equipped with its OneTouch contactless point-of-sale terminals from 4,000 to 20,000 by year-end.
Barclaycard says it plans to issue contactless cards to its cardholders across the UK. The Barclays Bank subsidiary has 10.1 million credit cardholders in Britain. In addition to acting as an issuer, Barclaycard provides merchant acquiring services in the UK. It has developed contactless technology for both its card issuing and acquiring operations (www.barclaycardbusiness.co.uk). Barclaycard began issuing contactless cards in London in September 2007 with the launch of its OnePulse 3-in-1 card. This combines a standard chip-and-PIN credit card with an Oyster prepaid contactless London transit card and Visa PayWave contactless payments. Since September 2007, 4,000 UK retailers, including 2,000 outside Greater London, have installed OneTouch terminals, Barclaycard says. Contactless payments are currently accepted by Rowlands Pharmacy, which has 500 OneTouch terminals live across the UK, and by mental health charity Mind. Mind has installed 94 OneTouch terminals at its shops, where the majority of sales are for items under ú10 (US$19). This is the transaction limit set by Barclaycard for contactless payments. The National Trust, a charity protecting heritage sites, will roll out 500 OneTouch terminals at its gift shops, tearooms, restaurants and admission payment points across Britain. Other UK retailers currently accepting contactless payments include Coffee Republic, Books Etc, Krispy Kreme and Yo! Sushi, Barclaycard says. Related Links
