Sri Lanka M-payments Service Launched

Indian technology firm mChek has teamed up with Dialog Telekom and NDB Bank to launch the mChek/Payments m-payments service in Sri Lanka. The Sri Lanka launch follows the rollout of mChek/Payments in India by mChek and Indian wireless telco Airtel.

The mChek/Payments platform is immediately available to all customers of Dialog and NDB Bank, mChek says. The two Sri Lanka-based companies have around 3.5 million customers in total, it says.

The service enables customers to use their cellphones to pay utility bills, make point-of-sale purchases, and top up mobile prepaid accounts. They can also carry out wireless banking transactions, mChek says. To use mChek/Payments, Sri Lankan customers need to install an mChek-enabled SIM card in their mobile phones.

According to mChek, customers can use their mChek-enabled mobile phones to make payments to merchants who also have mChek-enabled phones.

Sri Lanka has a large cash-based economy, although credit and debit card usage has slowly been rising, mChek says. In addition, there has been a dramatic increase in mobile phone usage, both in urban as well as rural markets, it says. This presents an opportunity to use mobile phones for electronic payments, the company says.
