London Retailers Sign Up for Barclaycard OnePulse
Barclaycard, the credit card arm of Barclays Bank, has signed up over 1,000 stores in London to accept its new contactless card. Well-known London retailers such as Coffee Republic, Threshers, Books Etc and YO! Sushi have agreed to accept the card for contactless payments below ú10 (US$20).
To be launched in September 2007, Barclaycard OnePulse combines a standard chip-and-PIN credit card with an Oyster contactless London transit card and contactless technology for payments below ú10. Under UK banking rules, contactless card payments below ú10 do not require a PIN to be entered. However, once the number of PIN-less transactions has reached a preset limit, such as ú100, then the cardholder will have to enter a PIN. Barclaycard estimates that it will have signed up several thousand London stores for Barclaycard OnePulse by the end of this year. Barclays signed a contract last year with TranSys, the group that operates the Oyster stored-value card system on behalf of Transport for London. The deal gives the bank exclusive rights to place Oyster on its credit and debit cards for the next three years. Related Links
