London Retailers Sign Up for Barclaycard OnePulse

Barclaycard, the credit card arm of Barclays Bank, has signed up over 1,000 stores in London to accept its new contactless card. Well-known London retailers such as Coffee Republic, Threshers, Books Etc and YO! Sushi have agreed to accept the card for contactless payments below ú10 (US$20).

To be launched in September 2007, Barclaycard OnePulse combines a standard chip-and-PIN credit card with an Oyster contactless London transit card and contactless technology for payments below ú10.

Under UK banking rules, contactless card payments below ú10 do not require a PIN to be entered. However, once the number of PIN-less transactions has reached a preset limit, such as ú100, then the cardholder will have to enter a PIN.

Barclaycard estimates that it will have signed up several thousand London stores for Barclaycard OnePulse by the end of this year.

Barclays signed a contract last year with TranSys, the group that operates the Oyster stored-value card system on behalf of Transport for London. The deal gives the bank exclusive rights to place Oyster on its credit and debit cards for the next three years.
