Visa Targets NYC Taxis for Contactless
Visa is targeting thousands of New York City taxis with Visa payWave contactless card readers. In a program launched with taxi technology company Creative Mobile Technologies (CMT), ViVOtech readers are being installed in the back of taxis, allowing passengers to make contactless payments using their Visa payWave cards.
ôCurrently, 99 cabs in New York have readers installed as a result of our program,ö says a Visa spokesperson. The readers can also accept traditional swipe card transactions and are capable of reading contactless cards from schemes other than Visa. Passengers are able to include a tip to the price of the fare, and no signature is required for transactions under US$25. Visa is promoting its taxi rollout with a TV advertising program called ôMorning in Manhattanö. Set to the background music of the Blue Danube Waltz, the commercial shows New Yorkers making small-ticket purchases such as coffee, donuts, newspapers and taxi fares, using Visa payWave cards and magnetic-stripe swipe cards. The harmony of the morning routine is broken when a customer pays with cash, but resumes when the next customer uses a contactless card. Last November, VeriFone partnered with MasterCard to install contactless card systems in Philadelphia taxis. Earlier this month, VeriFone announced that its contactless card reader technology was the first to be approved by the New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission for installation in New York's licensed taxis.
