Cellular South Launching M-Payment Trial

U.S mobile operator Cellular South is to launch a consumer trial of Obopay's wireless wallet and person-to-person payment service.

The trial, which will take place in Memphis, Tennessee and Jackson, Mississippi this summer, represents the first of a series of m-commerce services that Cellular South plans to deliver.

Redwood City, California-based Obopay offers a prepaid wallet which is accessed via cellphones. Customers wishing to send money first charge up their Obopay accounts. They then send money to other Obopay account-holders either from their cellphones or from the Obopay Website.

Recipients are notified of the arrival of their money via their cellphones. Obopay accounts are linked to prepaid MasterCard debit cards issued by First Premier Bank.

ôThe Cellular South deployment is a first for traditional wireless carriers,ö an Obopay spokesperson says in a statement. Last year, Obopay announced partnerships with niche mobile operators including AmpÆd, and Helio. The partnership with Cellular South will include a variety of marketing activities, the Obopay spokesperson says. In February 2007, Citigroup announced plans a pilot in which it would offer Obopay mobile person-to-person payments to new and existing Cit credit and debit card customers.
