Almost Half UK eShoppers Fear Card Fraud

While the UK is the worldÆs second-best place to do eCommerce, according to Booz Allen & Hamilton, MORI notes almost half (47 per cent) of UK online shoppers to have security concerns. Almost 12 million consumers (26 per cent of the population) bought online in the past year, MORI reports, despite 44 per cent knowing of media reports about card fraud. MORI also found 32 per cent of consumers to be concerned about giving personal data online, but reports just 3 per cent to have experienced online card fraud, versus 5 per cent having been hit by real-world credit card fraud.

MORIÆs survey of 4000 consumers suggests that while confidence in online shopping is rising, the fear of fraud is still a major factor in deterring many from buying online. Despite this, the favorite countries for UK online shoppers to buy from, are the US, France and Spain, mainly due to lower prices and convenience. User penetration is the UKÆs biggest eCommerce weakness, according to Booz Allen & Hamilton, but 67 per cent of UK consumers hold a credit card, versus 36 per cent in Germany, where eCommerce will achieve Ç5 billion in revenues for 2002, Forrester predicts.

ôGermany beats the UK in the number of online shoppers (18 million)ö, Europemedia.net reports, but ôtotal net turnover for the festive season will not exceed Ç2.2 billionö with German consumers spending 30 per cent less online than UK consumers, due to misgivings about online payments. æOnline-influencedÆ sales will exceed Ç20 billion across all of Europe, according to Forrester, with the fact that many Germans prefer to research goods online, before buying in-store, suggesting that e-tailers in Germany could boost eCommerce by investing in secure online shopping systems.
